Okeyo Foundation: Empowerment

POVERTY ALLEVIATION THROUGH SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISES

Our project will target mostly children who drop out of school after primary and secondary education. These are the kids who may be bright and may want to continue with their education, but due to lack of fees and guidance, end up being as child laborers or prostitutes along the fish landing beaches. Some of them end up taking drugs or join criminal activities; the girls end up in early polygamous poverty-ridden marriages.

Poverty is a basic cause of the stagnation of growth and development at the community level and this can be addressed through promoting the fishing industry by introducing such programmes as fish farming and caging; posho mills, basket and mat weaving, planting of trees, horticulture farming, etc to ensure food security.

Any attempts at improving the lives of the community must of necessity address the permissive low income levels, promote self reliance and reduce the dependency level in the community.

People must be encouraged to improve their productivity through equal participation in the process of income generation and remunerative employment. It is only through this process that the people can be empowered enough to sustain the pace of progress not only for themselves but also for the future generations.

We note that there has been an increase in the number of female headed households and that household food security has become more elusive in the Sub-county. These are major areas that need immediate and comprehensive interventions.

If you want to touch the past, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch a life. — Unknown
