Okeyo Foundation: Education

Our project will target mostly children who drop out of school after primary and secondary education. These are the kids who may be bright and may want to continue with their education, but due to lack of fees and guidance, end up being as child laborers or prostitutes along the fish landing beaches. Some of them end up taking drugs or join criminal activities; the girls end up in early polygamous poverty-ridden marriages.

The project will rehabilitate such kids so that those who want to return to school and complete their education will be encouraged and assisted to do so. But those who aren’t keen on this, will be sent to vocational training colleges in order to acquire skills which they could use to either start own enterprises by equipping them with the relevant tools and equipment or where possible assist them get employment.

We strongly believe that educating a child only upto high school without college/university education or vocational training thereafter is not adequate to equip them for the current competitive job market and this has greatly contributed to current youth ills bedeviling our society. In our case, any beneficiary of our project will be sponsored throughout until they have completed either university/college or vocational training.

Core Problems

Female children form the core of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable and most marginalized members of the community. Their participation in the education system is characterized by.

Low retention rate (high dropout rates) due to lack of school fees, early pregnancies and marriages, lack of books, poverty, lack of uniforms, deaths of parents, family conflicts and sicknesses.

  • Sexual exploitation
  • High prevalence of teenage pregnancy
  • Vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS
  • Poor quality of education
  • Heavy workload at home
  • Low performance in national examinations due to lack of competent teachers and adequate infrastructure such as laboratories and libraries; etc.
  • Child labour at the fish landing beaches which affects both boys and girls

The project will rehabilitate such kids so that those who want to return to school and complete their education will be encouraged and assisted to do so.

OUR STRATEGY

  • Advocate for the reduction in the existing disparities in the treatment of girls and boys within the community.
  • Improve the retention and the quality of education of girls in the schools within the community.
  • Sensitize the community on the vulnerable position of girls.
  • Promote the enrollment of girls in non gender stereo type courses in the education.
  • Promote the participation of the community in the management and administration of the curriculum.
  • Introduce projects that rehabilitate both boys and girls and send them back to school and vocational training centers.
